Why Are My Energy Bills So High?
February 17, 2023
Heating and cooling can account for nearly half of a home’s energy usage. With HVAC energy consumption tied to the weather and seasonal changes, it may cause Richmond and Central Virginians to see high energy bills this time of year.
How can you tell when it’s time to call a pro? Here are a few signs that something is going wrong with the auxiliary heat on your heat pump:
- The electricity bill is much higher than normal: If you notice a sudden jump in your energy bill, it may mean that AUX heat is running too often. Of course, it’s also important to choose an HVAC system that’s the right size for your home to maximize your energy savings.
- The AUX heat is running, but it’s hot outside: Unless temperatures are 35 degrees Fahrenheit or below, it doesn’t make sense for AUX heat to run for a long time. AUX heat shouldn’t turn on unless you raise the thermostat temperature by several degrees.
- AUX heat doesn’t respond to thermostat changes: Turning your thermostat down to ambient temperature should cause AUX heat to turn off immediately. If you notice that secondary heating keeps going even it’s warm inside or the thermostat is turned off, there may something wrong.
- The home feels too warm: If you notice indoor temperatures over 80 degrees and the AUX heat is still running, there’s likely a problem. Check the thermostat to make sure it hasn’t been bumped.
- The defrost mode light stays on continuously: If you notice the heat pump defrosting for a long period of time, call a professional right away.
AirMaxx Mechanical has a few tips for saving energy in the winter and maximize the efficiency of your home’s HVAC system!
Make sure your air filter is clean – check it monthly and replace it regularly.
Don’t crank the thermostat up to compensate for extreme temps. Leave it at the same temperature you normally have it set. (The ideal winter thermostat temperature is 68 degrees.)
Clear snow and ice from your outdoor unit with a soft broom, never use sharp item!
Check your exterior heating vents for snow or ice build up.
Schedule annual preventive maintenance to ensure your HVAC system is running smoothly!
